The Sheffield Cats Shelter is hosting an event to celebrate their 128th birthday, raising money to help buy a new building.

Their current site has helped shelter cats for over 50 years, however, due to its age, it has become outdated for their current needs.

Fundraiser, Millie Guthrie, said: “It’s a Victorian building, difficult to heat, inaccessible, no parking, so we need somewhere which is accessible for people in wheelchairs, or have children in prams.

“We can help more cats if we have more rooms available.”

The event will include a tombola, food and drink, arts and crafts, cat themed gifts, and much more, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Despite the excitement of looking for a new building, the volunteers at the shelter are not taking their old building for granted.

When asked about what they are celebrating about the current site, Mrs Guthrie said: “Just that it’s survived. It’s one of the longest surviving animal shelters in the whole of the UK, and the fact that we’ve managed 60 years in this building is really something.

“Our focus is to celebrate what we’ve achieved here, and what we will achieve in a bigger building.”

The new building is needed, as the charity is receiving more and more cats into their care.

Another fundraiser, Jordan Johnathon, said: “It’s celebrating another year of running, another year of saving cats.

“Because of the cost of living crisis, we are getting more and more cats, cats that need dental work because their owners can no longer afford it because it’s so much more expensive to have a pet these days.”

The event celebrates the last year, with the charity successfully rehoming over 300 cats.

To help their cause, the charity looks to educate cat owners on how to keep their pets safe.

Mrs Guthrie said: “Another message we want to put out there is for people to have their cats neutered. A female cat by the time it is four months old can actually have a litter of kittens.”

The event is on Saturday the 10th May and starts at 1:30 pm.
