Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (SRASAC) has been named as a finalist in the Care, Support and Wellbeing category at the Lord Mayor Awards 2026.

The all-women charity was set up in 1980 and supports recovery from emotional and psychological distress caused by trauma from rape, sexual violence or sexual abuse.

Safiya Saeed, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “The finalists recognised this year reflect the very best of Sheffield. They are all people who give their time, talent, and compassion to lift others up and strengthen our city.”

The judging panel commended the charity for its ‘trauma-informed, person-centred support and vital citywide advocacy.’

Meera Kulkarni, CEO of SRASAC, said: “Being a finalist is an honour because it reflects survivors’ bravery, and the privilege we have as a team to support their healing and recovery.”

In January, SRASAC reported that it had supported 381 survivors in total, with 13 completing their support programme with them.

Ms Kulkarni said: “It’s also a reminder that sexual violence and abuse are far too common, and specialist services are under huge pressure.”

In England and Wales, 6.5 million women have been raped or sexually assaulted since the age of 16 and, according to recent research, women who have been sexually abused by a partner are seven times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past year than those who haven’t.

Ms Kulkarni believes that the recognition from this award sheds light on the pressures specialist services are facing as they “carry more demand than current funding allows”.

The government has announced £550 million in funding for specialist victim support services over the next two years, but several local Rape Crisis centres across the country have already had to close.

Last year, SRASAC was able to raise more than £3,000 which helping it to continue providing care and support for survivors of sexual violence in Sheffield.

Ms Kulkarni said: “Despite the pressures, we’re genuinely grateful for this recognition. It reflects the courage of survivors and the commitment and care our team brings to our work every day.”

The winners will be announced today, 19 February, at Sheffield Town Hall.
