A multi-million pound tram station to be built outside of Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham is due to open on April 7th.

The scheme, which has been funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in partnership with Supertram and Network Rail, began work in March 2025 and is set to provide easy access to the Magna Science Adventure Centre, one of the most popular family attractions in South Yorkshire.

The new station will also build on previous travel links between Sheffield and Rotherham, with the project being the first new stop on the Supertram network since 2018.

Leader of Rotherham Council, Councillor Chris Read, said: “The new Tram station at Magna is a major step forward for Rotherham and the wider region – improving the way our public transport network works, and strengthening our plans for more jobs and homes along the corridor along Templeborough and beyond.”

Part of the project’s aim according to SYMCA is to “address major congestion in the Templeborough area between Rotherham and Sheffield particularly at Junction 34 of the M1”,  and “protect the area’s Air Quality Management Areas”, as part of the cities’ obligation to the Environment Act 1995.

There will be over 100 park and ride spaces at the stop, as well as provisions for electric vehicle charging points and parking for bicycles and motorbikes.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield deserves a first-class transport network and that is what we, along with South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, are working to provide. “The addition of this brand-new station at Magna is the first stop on a fantastic future for our beloved SuperTram.

“Expanding it, and the rest of the transport infrastructure as part of South Yorkshire’s People’s Network, will not only improve how people get around Sheffield and further afield but it will also help drive economic growth and create the jobs people want and need.”

Following a £7.5 million investment from the Department of Transport, SYMCA have announced further plans for potential extensions to the network that could connect more areas across Rotherham, Sheffield and South Yorkshire via Supertram.
