Thousands of Sheffield residents will head to the polls next week for the biggest set of elections since the 2024 general election.
Polling stations in South and West Yorkshire will be opening their doors on Thursday 7 May for this year’s council elections.
In South Yorkshire, Sheffield City Council and Barnsley Council will be holding elections, with Doncaster Council and Rotherham Council electing in 2029 and 2028 respectively.
All seats will be contested in Barnsley for the first time since 2004 in what is known as an “all-out”, while Sheffield will be using a traditional “thirds” system which will see only a third of councillors fight for their seats.
University of Sheffield politics lecturer Dr Andrew Barclay explains the importance of these elections.
