A man has been sentenced to over five years in prison after police found him in possession of class A drugs.

Police found him at his house with large amounts of drugs, cash, a knife, and a Rolex watch, Sheffield Crown Court heard on 30 April.

Janeal Dennis, 30, from Wincobank Close, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a class A controlled drug and possession of criminal property.

Judge Recorder Helen Chapman said: ”History takes this case to the very top end of the sentencing bracket.”

Dennis had already been convicted twice for similar offences, receiving sentences of three years and then a further six and a half years, the court heard.

Prosecuting lawyer Katherine White said: “In his home, police found 307.5 grams of cocaine, 5.5 grams of crack cocaine, 1.9 grams of heroin, £5,300 in cash, a small amount of cannabis, a large knife and a Rolex watch.

“They also found several mobile phones with clear evidence of street dealing on them, and all the drugs were wrapped up and ready to be supplied.”

Defence lawyer Richard Barradell said: “He is very remorseful, he knows he let his family and his girlfriend down.”

He added that Dennis suffers from sickle cell anaemia and got addicted to strong painkillers, which later led to heroin use, the court heard.

He also argued that a delay of seven and a half months in sentencing due to a co-accused should be taken into account, because Dennis said from the start that he had nothing to do with the crime.

When sentencing, Judge Chapman said: “This is a category three case because this was a case of street dealing.”

She added that the mitigating features were his remorse and his heroin habits due to prescription addiction.

Dennis was sentenced to 53 months’ imprisonment and will serve at least half of this in custody before being released on licence.
