Council staff celebrated the news
Sheffield has been given a Purple Flag award for the 11th year in a row, marking the nightlife as one of the safest in UK and Ireland.
Nick Simmonite, chairman of Unight Sheffield said: “Purple flag recognizes some of the great work we’ve done over the years.”
“We continuously seek to improve what we do individually and collectively and that raises the bar for everyone else”.
Unight Life serves as a non-profit organisation that connects all nightlife in Sheffield. It ensures going out remains safe for everyone.
Sheffield’s nightlife is the only one awarded in the entirety of South Yorkshire. Mr Simmonite said it, “that shows that [Sheffield]’s got some kind of appeal.”
He said street patrols, door staff and CCTV teams “looking out for us and for our guests” helped to ensure people were safe at night.
“We’ve got a lot of people visiting Sheffield just for the weekend and we’re the reason people visit.
“This is about making sure our guests in the wider community are safe.”
Libby Hume, 19, a bartender at Fire Pit and a student at the University of Sheffield said: “I feel safe at my job.
“I have never had an experience working that has made me feel unsafe.”
At Revolucion de Cuba, staff ensure clients’ safety through many different policies, including guarding against drink spiking, such as a drink being left unattended will be taken. They also offer stickers for drinks to ensure spiking is minimized.
Hope Morgan, 20, manager at Revolution de Cuba said: “We’ve got a pretty good culture for nightlife here.”
But when thinking of Sheffield as a whole, Mr Morgan said: “I wouldn’t have thought it would’ve won the Purple Flag. Sheffield has had a lot of problems with spiking.”
When referring to the Sheffield nightlife, Miss Hume said: “I know bars and clubs are making big efforts to prevent drunk spiking.”
Despite last year’s concerns over drink spiking, Sheffield’s nightlife continues very popular with the opening of new clubs like Forge, or the reopening of older ones like Code.
Sheffield is also known for having Leadmill, the oldest running live music venue and club, opening in 1980. Leadmill has received many awards and continuous to be seen as a very respectable venue.
Miss Hume says: “I think Sheffield is one of the best and safest nights out.”
