Sheffield United are one of England’s most historic teams and this season have progressed far in one of its oldest competitions – the FA Cup.
The team recently reached the quarter finals in a dramatic victory against Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur.
Since 1889, the Blades hold a firm place in football heritage. They were the founding members of the Football League Second Division in 1892. As well as scoring the first ever goal in the 1992 Premier League.
They are also one of only five teams to win the title in all four divisions of professional English football.
The FA Cup was first played in 1871 and is widely regarded to be one of the greatest cup competitions in world football. Sheffield United, in their long history, have won it an impressive four times in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925.
The team from Bramall Lane are well on their way to potentially making history again this season, with their ’round of sixteen’ tie finishing 1-0 to the Blades as they brushed aside top-four chasers Spurs.
This means that they will face Blackburn Rovers in the quarter finals which should be a more even contest for Paul Heckingbottom’s team, a trip to Wembley could well be on the cards for Sheffield United.
The fans expressed their pride and admiration for United’s performance after the game last night, Harry Stone, 26 said: “We had it in us tonight, you could tell from the first minute. Spurs were playing badly, and we capitalised on it. It’s a massive win.”
Terry Warner, 61, said: “We looked the better team if you’d believe it! The fight was there, and the lads put everything into getting the win.
“Onwards to the quarters. Come on you Blades!”
The manager Paul Heckingbottom, speaking in a press conference about the atmosphere said there’s a “different feeling” about the FA Cup.
Sheffield United will look to progress to the semi-finals when they face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 18thMarch.
