A reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is looking more likely, following announcement from South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard
Twitter users have been buzzing after Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) heard news of potentially reopening.
One Twitter user, @H1Raymond, said: “Stop ignoring us, we need your support to reopen our airport so that we can play our part in boosting the economy.”
South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard revealed that the region is poised to advance significantly in securing the future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, pending the approval of plans next week.
This comes after the airport ceased all operations in November 2022 due to their operating group, Peel Group, stating the airport was financially unviable.
The Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) Board will convene on February 13 to decide on the fate of a £138 million investment proposal aimed at unleashing the potential for a “South Yorkshire Airport City and Gateway East Development.”
The council’s South Yorkshire Airport City program will integrate this element, aiming to cultivate economic activity centred on the airport.
Proposed initiatives include retail, leisure, and logistics endeavours, with the potential to yield an estimated 16,500 new job opportunities.
The potential reopening of the airport is part of a 10 year plan to drive economic growth in Doncaster and surrounding areas.
