The Showroom Cinema in Sheffield hosted an open mic event, with all proceeds going to Palestine.
Sheffield Writers For Palestine organised the event and raised around £500 on Wednesday which has already been donated.
Mamie, the founder of SWFP, said: “I have a friend out in Gaza at the moment who runs a charity so I wanted to raise some money as well so I came up with the idea of an open mic.
“I hope events like this can keep the conversation going as news can become old news very quickly. It’s also about bringing people together and having solidarity with the people of Palestine.
“It’s a tiny thing we’re doing but it all helps.”
Poems were read out by writers, poets and anyone who wanted to have their say and spectators were asked to pay what they wanted on the door.
This is the second event of such kind organized by SWFP after they hosted one in Nether Edge a few weeks ago.
Mamie added: “I wanted to put something on that a different demographic of people could come to.
“I thought of this sort of event because I am a writer, I have writer friends and I know people love open mic and reading out their own work so I wanted a way to monetise this and ensure it was going to a good cause.
“I hope to keep organising these kind of things whilst people are interested in it and are happy to donate.”
Charlie Stewart, 21, who attended the event said: “It was a brilliant event for a brilliant cause. I thought all the poems read out were powerful and some of them were truly harrowing.
“I also have a friend out in Gaza so it means a lot to me and I often feel like there’s not enough being done so events like this give me hope and it shows people still care.”
The Showroom Cinema provided their venue for free to ensure all proceeds could go towards Palestine.
