Sheffield Wednesday striker Ike Ugbo has been nominated for a potentially record-breaking Player of the Month award in the Sky Bet Championship.

Ugbo has now scored six goals in nine games for Wednesday since joining on loan from French side Troyes in January.

If he wins, the striker can break a club record – becoming the first Sheffield Wednesday player to win a Championship Player of the Month award in their history.

The Owls made one of the worst starts to a season in Championship history, picking up just 3 points from their first 13 games. However, since appointing manager Danny Rohl, Wednesday have gone on to pick up 25 points from their next 25 games, meaning they are only in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Wednesday season ticket holder Billy Roberts said: “The turnaround at our club over the last few weeks has been unbelievable. Never in a million years, after those first 13 games, would I have thought we would even have a chance of staying up. If we manage it, it would be a football miracle.”

The Owls have started to pick up serious form – arguably at the most important point of the season, with only 10 games left to play. The team have won 5 of their last 6 games, beating fellow relegation candidates such as Birmingham and Millwall.

Ugbo is a strong candidate for the award, having scored 5 goals in as many games in February. The winner of the award will be revealed on Friday morning.

Wednesday fan Daly Green said: “Ike has been incredible since he’s joined. The fans love him already and he seems to be playing with so much confidence. He may be the difference between going down and staying up.”

The next few games don’t get much easier for the Owls – they host in-form Leeds on Friday night, with trips to Ipswich and Middlesborough on the horizon.

However, Daly has reason to be optimistic.

“If there’s anything this club has taught us, especially last season, is that they never give up. The fans will back the players until the last minute of the season. We will keep dreaming.”
