The County FA have released details about the upcoming football referee course taking place in Barnsley College.

The training programme is set to take place on both the 22 and 26 of May.

It is open for anyone 14 years of age or older, with it providing a platform for people to get into the game.

Appointment officer and referee officer for Sheffield and Hallamshire Women and Girls League, Richard Trinder emphasised the importance of those of all ages in getting stuck into officiating and why he is still involved to this day.

He said: “It is such great fun, and you’re able to get paid.

“For youngsters, it replaces the mundane jobs of stacking shelves and working tills; what better way to earn pocket money than doing something that you love.”

He also spoke highly about the opportunity of ex-players getting involved in refereeing.

“Players that have done junior football, maybe fallen out of love with the game can come and start refereeing.

“A whole new career may open up.”

ShefNews exclusively spoke to Mr Trinder about the course in more detail, alongside the struggle with abuse directed towards match officials in the game.
