Sheffield Wednesday Football Club hosted their annual community day yesterday, with a handful of events taking place throughout the day at Hillsborough.

The aim of the event is to increase community engagement with the supporters of the club.

Hundreds took to the pitch throughout the day, ranging from school children to members of the armed forces.

Brett Pichers, Head of Integration at the club said: “We’ve seen such a mix of people playing on the pitch, from younger to older”.

“The young kids see their idols play on here every Saturday, and now they’ve had that opportunity to play on that same turf.”

“It’s a fantastic chance for them, something they won’t get every year of their lives.”

Hillsborough College and Sheffield United College also faced off in two fiery Varsity matches, with Sheffield United triumphant in the women’s match and Hillsborough College victorious in the men’s.

It was Sheffield United who collected the varsity trophy, accumulating the most points throughout the day’s events, and they lifted the trophy with their jubilant fans as the day came to a close.

Wednesday’s recent relegation survival further added to the festivity, with everyone in great spirits throughout the event.
