South Yorkshire boasts three of the seven shortlisted projects for the RIBA Yorkshire Awards later this year.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is a global professional membership body driving excellence in architecture.

A regional jury will visit all of the listed projects, and the winners will be announced this spring.

The projects will then be considered for the RIBA Special Awards including the RIBA Sustainability award, RIBA Building of the Year and in the summer, an opportunity to win the RIBA National Award.

The University of Sheffield’s the Wave building, by HLM Architects; Petronella House, a private home also in Sheffield, designed by Chiles Evans + Care Architects; and AESSEAL’s Factory for the Future in Rotherham have all made it onto the seven project long list.

RIBA Yorkshire Jury Chair Gayle Appleyard, Director of Gagarin Studio said: “The Yorkshire region is home to a wonderful mix of people across cities, towns and rural communities, so it’s encouraging to see such diversity reflected in this year’s shortlist.”

The University of Sheffield’s social sciences building, the Wave, has already received a sustainability award and Social Infrastructure Project of the Year in 2024.

Mark Holden, Associate Director of Estates and Facilities Management at the University of Sheffield, said: “We are incredibly proud that the Wave has been shortlisted for the RIBA Yorkshire Awards 2025, putting it alongside so many other pioneering, beautiful and important projects.

“The Wave represents our commitment to creating spaces on campus for our students and staff that are sustainable, innovative, and have a positive impact on the urban environment.”

Chiles Evans + Care Architects’ Petronella House involves the refurbishment of a Victorian villa in a Sheffield conservation area.

It is an example of contemporary conservation, restoration and refurbishment.

A spokesperson for CE+CA said: “We are thrilled to make this year’s RIBA Yorkshire Shortlist for Petronella House.

“As a practice we strive to deliver beautiful architecture that both respects the buildings we work on and the needs of the clients.

“It is therefore lovely to be recognised by our peers for our work and to be on the shortlist alongside many other great projects.”

AESSEAL’s Factory For the Future is a 175,000 square foot state-of-the-art factory designed as a global showcase for sustainable manufacturing, near Magna.

£5.8 million was spent on ‘green only’ investment, such as solar panels and battery storage to ensure the sustainability of the factory.
