As of 2025 there are 7,540 pubs and restaurants in Sheffield but this number is predicted to half by 2030 according to figures by Capital on tap.
Businesses have struggled to cope with the cost of living crisis and that has led to many beloved pubs and restaurants having to close down.
Bartender at The Hallamshire House, Emma said: “I think it [the closures] will take a big toll on people. Pubs are quite an essential thing for some people, especially student life so its a shame.”
Between 2022 and 2024, over 450 pubs, restaurants and cafes closed in Yorkshire according to figures from Trade Body UK Hospitality.
Despite these challenges, many pubs are still thriving and continue to draw in customers, with 16 pubs re-opening in Sheffield in 2024.
Community events like Sheffield Beer Week and student nights are great incentives to keep the bar and hospitality industry in Sheffield alive.
