Beer Central in the Moor Market closed down yesterday after 13 years of trading.
The independent shop sold a range of craft ales, beers, ciders and meads, produced both locally and nationally, and had become a “cornerstone of Sheffield’s beer community”, according to its website.
The owner of the shop, Megan Lindop, 29, cited the “cost of living” crisis as one of the biggest challenges that she’s faced whilst owning the shop.
She said: “People are struggling to kind of afford those little extra treats and usually it’s alcohol that tends to be the first one to go along with, I think, salons or something like that.
Ms Lindop bought the shop in September 2024 after much-loved former owners Sean Clarke and Deborah Jackson decided to sell the business for “personal reasons.”
However, Ms Lindop originally ran the business remotely, from Scotland, where she runs a taproom called Krafty Fine Drinks.
On this, she said: “I had a team down here that was working in the shop that I was managing them from remote.
“The fact that I lived in Scotland and tried to run a business remotely in Sheffield, it was a bit of a challenge. It kind of wore me out a little bit.”
Despite this, Ms Lindop stated that she feels like she “learnt a lot running a business.”
She added: “It’s an institution, so running this institution I have learnt a lot.
“I’m just really proud of the fact that I could continue on Sean’s legacy even for a short period of time.
“It’s maybe changed my perspective on business, definitely. But I still love craft beer.”

There were a number of sales in the final days of trading this week, with at least 20% off on all products.
As well as this, furnishings in the shop, such as artwork, crates and even fridges, were being sold off at discounted prices.
Ms Lindop will now return to Scotland to focus on Krafty after trading ceased this week.
In her final message to her loyal customers, she said: “Thank you for supporting us all these years, and please, there’s so many craft beer bars, craft tap rooms, bottle shops. Please support them all.”
