Several residents have been evacuated from houses after a tree fell on two buildings on Harcourt Road in Sheffield.

At 10am today, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called out to the street, following reports of a tree collapsing and falling onto a building.

Although there were no casualties, as a precaution, the premises have been evacuated to allow for safe removal of the tree and all other debris.

Two police cars and one fire engine were at the scene with a cordon securing the houses and neighbouring buildings concerned.

Archie Tait, a student who lives further along the road, said: “It’s just really strange because it’s quite a quiet road, so you never really have stuff go on.

“I noticed it was very windy last night and a bit this morning, but I didn’t think it was strong enough to bring up a tree.”

Paul Haslam, Crew Manager at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “Most of our work here is nearly done, we’ve cleared debris, we’re just about to start clearing some of these branches which are on the roof which may pose a risk, should the winds build up again.

“Once that’s done, we will hand over to the building occupier, where it will be a case of removing the tree, which is quite a significant size and has been completely uprooted.”

The incident, which impacted two properties and approximately five flats, is believed to be a result of yellow weather warnings, issued due to the wind. In the early hours of last night, wind speeds reached over 28mph in Sheffield.
