Rotherham United have confirmed the appointment of ex-England and Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren as Head of Football following their relegation into League Two.

Steve McClaren has been out of work since he left his role as manager of Jamaica in November 2025.

He was appointed as England manager in 2006, before he was sacked after 16 months in charge.

He said: ”You have to stop the rot and that’s the first job. Don’t even think about or contemplate promotion. It’s stopping the rot and getting proper people in here who work hard.

“There’s going to have to be a lot of great support from the fans but also a lot of patience.”

The Head of Football will “provide strategic leadership and oversight across our football operations with the objective of rebuilding the club,” and “manage the process for the recruitment and define performance expectations” according to the club’s website.

McClaren said: “I think I’ve reached a stage in my career where I need to use my experience. I’ve always had my eye on a director of football/head of football role [or] some way I can move upstairs and influence on a bigger scale.”

The club’s long time owner Tony Stewart, has said: “He’ll take all responsibility to do with football. Whether it’s recruitment, academy, even doctors and physios. I’m backing Steve to take control.

“Something had to be done and it had to be exceptional, and I believe what we’ve done today is exceptional.”
