Sheffield Steel Rapper placed first in the Championship division at the Dancing England Rapper Tournament (DERT), earning promotion to the Premiership in next year’s edition .

Established in 2012, the group consists of around 20 members that meet weekly and perform in pubs all around Sheffield.

Becky Eden Green, member of Sheffield Steel Rapper, said: “I think we nearly took the roof off with our celebrations when we were announced as winners.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve competed or placed in a DERT so the result was huge for us. There’s going to be people who see it and feel motivated to get involved themselves.”

At this year’s competition in Whitby, the group were awarded 381.5 points after their five judged dances, earning them an overall placement of 4th out of 20 teams

Rapper dancing is usually performed in groups of 5, each holding rapper swords made from flexible steel and accompanied by traditional folk music.

Ms Eden Green added: “The history of the dance originates with the mining communities in Newcastle, so we like to perform in pubs to keep the tradition of dancing in confined spaces alive. I also think it adds to the spectacle of it all.”
