A man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson at Sheffield Arena in October 2023 has been re-bailed.

South Yorkshire Police originally arrested the man on 14 November 2023. He has since been re-bailed seven times.

A force spokesperson confirmed the bail, which will continue until May 29, today.

The spokesperson said: “The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to understand the circumstances surrounding Adam’s tragic death.

“Our thoughts remain with Adam’s family and friends.”

Mr Johnson, 29, who played for Nottingham Panthers, was fatally injured during a game against Sheffield Steelers on 28 October 2023.

The incident was witnessed by spectators during the Challenge Cup match. Attempts to save Johnson’s life were made.

He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination confirmed he had died as a result of a neck injury.

Within days of his death, Coroner Tanyka Rawden called for mandatory neckguards in ice hockey.
