A 25-year-old man from Cleethorpes has been convicted of terrorism offenses following a two-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
Mohammed Mahfuz Ahmed, of Crowhill Avenue, was found guilty of disseminating terrorist publications and encouraging terrorism.
He was arrested in April 2024 in an intelligence-led operation by Counter Terrorism Policing, supported by Humberside Police.
Deputy Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, the head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said Ahmed ‘often included graphic content and glorified acts of terrorism’ in his posts.
He said: “He went to considerable lengths to seek out and share material that could not easily be found on mainstream online platforms. The potential impact of his actions should not be underestimated.”
Evidence from Ahmed’s home revealed a ‘deep-seated extremist mindset’ as well as various pieces of propaganda that promoted jihad.
He used five social media accounts over five months to spread terrorist content, attracting more than 14,000 responses. Police said his posts encouraged violence and identified targets.
Ahmed has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 17 April.
Counter Terrorism Policing continues efforts to remove extremist content and prevent the spread of radical ideology.
