Following their call for artists to volunteer a design last month, Sheffield University’s Arts Society have officially began their production of a new snowdrop-inspired mural in the Snowdrop Projects base.
The Snowdrop Project is a local Sheffield-based charity whose main aim is to provide support and help empower those who are survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking occuring in South Yorkshire.
They have sought the assistance of the society to create a mural for one of their rooms, with the aim of creating a warm and welcoming environment suitable for the charity.
The Arts Society originally met the Snowdrop Project at the Freshers Fair and reached out to them to work on a mural.
The society then held a competition for the design with the winners design being used for the mural, as well as receiving £30 in arts materials.
The mural itself is being painted in a room that Snowdrop will be using as a yoga studio and play group.
Speaking on the elected winning design, Adam Short, the secretary of the Art Society, said: “The chosen design is meant to represent serenity. They (Snowdrop) wanted a relaxing space. It incorporated the snowdrop design alongside, the colours represent their iconography”.
More volunteers are being encouraged to get involved in the project and help support both the charity and the society themselves.
Secretary of People Against the Trafficking of Humans (PATH), Amelina said: “I am on the committee of a society called PATH, which works to spread awareness around human trafficking, and works with charities such as Snowdrop”.
Speaking on the mural Amelina said: “It helps liven up the room and boost people’s spirits”.
Adam said: “We’re trying to get more members involved, any volunteering. Also it’s just a good project for the society as people get to come along, have a paint, relax, it’s mindfulness as well.”
Snowdrop also help raise money through events such as organising teams for the Sheffield Marathon, The Sheffield 1000 and the Snowdrop Steps, a walking challenge to support survivors of modern slavery and exploitation, where the participants walk 56 miles in a month, which is just 2 miles a day, to fundraise £50.
