As political division surrounding migration continues to grow, volunteers throughout Sheffield are helping the city’s most vulnerable discover connection and support.
At St. Mary’s Church and City of Sanctuary Sheffield, community-driven initiatives within the council’s network of Welcome Places strive to create welcoming spaces for those adjusting to life in the UK.
Volunteers say their work extends basic support, with social interaction and open conversation playing a central role in their efforts to help people feel included.
“Sheffield welcomes those in need of help, so let’s restore some humanity,” says volunteer English tutor Ian McHugh.
Those involved say volunteering is equally rewarding, broadening their perspectives through meeting people from diverse cultures, various backgrounds and different life experiences.
