Votes have been counted, and the new councillors are being named for wards across Sheffield, with Reform and Green sweeping the votes in the beginning stages.
The leader of the city council, Labour’s Tom Hunt, has lost his seat to Andrew Davies of the Greens.
Mustafa Ahmed pulled out a Palestinian flag while on stage, smiling and shouting “Free Palestine”.
He received boos and jeers from sections of the crowd, with one spectator heard shouting the word ‘terrorist’ and another branding it ‘disgusting’.
Green Councillor Maleiki Haybe has been re-elected for Broomhill and Sharrow Vale with over 4,000 votes, smashing the young vote in a student-heavy area.
Councillor Haybe said: “I’m honoured. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like that. I think people just want someone real, someone who looks like them and is themselves. You see politicians wearing suits and putting on an accent, but what affects policy is actually experiencing it and living in it.
“I think people are just sick and tired of the bollocks.”
Conservative candidate Charles Peter Hughes was running against Haybe for election in Broomhill and Sharrow Vale. He said: “I believe in maturity when it comes to politics. I want to work with Labour, Greens, Lib Dems…maybe not Reform, but I would for the betterment of the city.
“We have failed the country. We’re going to see a decrease in votes. I’m not feeling optimistic, I’m also not feeling negative either. It gives me something to build on.”
Green and Reform continue to sweep Sheffield votes, with one Liberal Democrat holding Stannington.
